What does nursing mean to you and why are you choosing it as your profession? Nursing has always been a career that I desired to pursue. It has been my passion to be a part of a professional nursing school even before I started learning English as a second language. I belong to Benin which is a country in West Africa and male nurses are stereotyped in our region as unmanly. It was due to this labeling of nurses that I did not opt for nursing despite of my true passion to become a nurse. I have taken my stand now to become a nurse and I strongly believe that nursing is a profession of dignity and it provides an individual with an opportunity to be of assistance to others.

The public health system in Benin fails to meet the needs of the patients. This is owing to the shortage of trained staff as well as the lack of funds for the purchase of modern treatment equipment, ambulances, linens and medicinal drugs. The condition can be analyzed from the fact that surgeries have to be cancelled owing to the lack of sterile surgical instruments, towels and sheets. There is a scarcity of nurses and the essential services that are provided by nurses are undertaken by unprofessional people like relatives of the patients.

Many patients lose their lives as the hospital is unable to cater to their medical conditions owing to lack of appropriate equipment. A shattering occurrence that totally changed my life and further persuaded me to become a part of this health system and revolutionize it was my father’s death in a hospital eight years ago in Benin. My father was on oxygen therapy in a hospital but the hospital administration decided on removing the oxygen tank as a younger patient needed emergency oxygen therapy.

My father died begging for air and this incident still devastates me when I think about it. In a hospital where there were 10,000 patients admitted, there were only 10 tanks available to supply oxygen and this is the reason why many people lose their battles and die in our country. My purpose to enroll in the nursing program at the Aria Nursing School is to gain the best possible education in nursing with all my efforts so that one day I can return to Africa and offer all my assistance and help for the improvement of the health system in my country where it is needed the most.

My wife is a Registered Nurse and she used to tell me the great stories with regard to her work. I still refrained from applying to nursing schools because of my fear to dissatisfy my parents with my professional choice. Thus, I went ahead to complete an Associate Degree in Computer Science but despite of my degree I was unable to find a job. The occurrences in my wife’s career and her support along with my deep desire to become a nurse finally pushed me to attend a nursing assistant training school to finally enroll in the field of my choice.

Nursing is a profession with a limitless horizon. It is a field which will provide me with the opportunity of caring for others which has always been my wish. It is a very rewarding job and I believe that I would feel rewarded by being of assistance to the patients and their families. I have taken this strong step to become a part of a profession that I truly admire and also to provide care and help to others. It would be an honor for me if I am granted a placement in the Aria Nursing School as it is one of the finest nursing schools in the United States.

I will benefit from my educational years and put in all my strength and efforts to gain the most from this educational experience. I am more than willing to invest my time as well as my energy for the completion of my education so that I can be qualified to provide the most optimal care to the people who are in need. I wish to make a great difference in peoples lives by helping them recover from their ailments.
